Google Ads for Shopify Not Converting? 7 Fixes That Work
Eight times out of ten, "Google Ads doesn't work for us" is one of these seven problems — and none of them are fixed by raising the budget. Run this diagnostic before you blame the channel.
1. Your conversion tracking is lying
Everything downstream depends on this. If purchase events are double-counted, missing, or attributed to the wrong source, Google's bidding is optimizing toward noise. Check that GA4 and Google Ads conversions match Shopify's own order count, that the purchase event fires once per order, and that you're not counting "add to cart" as a conversion. Fix this before touching a single bid.
2. Your Merchant Center feed is weak
Shopping and Performance Max are only as good as the feed. The usual killers: vague titles that miss the searched terms, missing GTIN and brand attributes, poor primary images, and disapproved items nobody noticed. Merchant Center feed optimization — descriptive titles, complete attributes, correct categories — is often the single highest-ROI change on a Shopify account.
3. Performance Max is hoovering up budget
PMax will happily spend on cheap, low-intent placements and report conversions you can't verify. If PMax is eating most of your budget with no clear lift, restrict it: run branded traffic in a separate search campaign, exclude, and compare PMax's marginal ROAS against a controlled search-only baseline. Performance Max for Shopify works — but as a demand-capture layer on top of a solid search foundation, not as your only campaign.
4. You're sending ads to the wrong page
Sending paid traffic to your homepage is a conversion tax. Match the query to the exact product or collection page, and make sure the offer in the ad is visible on the landing page above the fold. Price, shipping promise and stock status should all match the ad.
5. The PDP isn't built to convert paid traffic
Paid visitors don't browse — they evaluate fast. Slow load, hidden shipping costs, no reviews, weak images, and a checkout that surprises with fees are all paid-traffic killers. Test the mobile experience on a throttled connection; that's where most of the budget is spent.
6. Offer mismatch
You can't outbid a bad offer. If the store's positioning is "premium" but the ad shouts a discount, or vice versa, the click happens and the conversion dies. Align the ad hook, landing page and price for each audience segment.
7. No negatives, no discipline
Unchecked broad match and missing negative keyword lists leak budget into irrelevant searches. Review the search terms report weekly, add negatives aggressively, and keep a separate branded campaign so brand clicks don't inflate your non-brand results.
Order of operations: tracking → feed → structure → creative → scale. Fix in that order or you'll be optimizing on bad data.
